The Thing with the Laundry

3 months absence require some laundry, that was clear. I was really worried about that. I never do laundry on vacations and the last time we were in Hoi An, I had my own washing machine in the house. The problem back then wasn't the washing, but rather the drying. In the rainy season, nothing dries at all. This time, too, I'm worried about drying. I hardly ever use my dryer at home for outerwear so that nothing shrinks or is damaged in any other way. But here I don't think we can do without.

In February, we only stayed in hotels and doing laundry there would have been far too expensive. So towards the end of our stay in Taipei, we looked for a laundromat near our hotel. It's the first time I've gone to a laundrette. I was a bit excited. 😊

It was a simple salon where many people from the neighborhood brought their washed laundry to dry. There was a bench in front of the shop window so that we could sit in front of it like in a movie theater. We waited anxiously to see what would happen to our laundry, first in a washing machine, then in a dryer. Another new experience.

There are laundry services on every corner in Hoi An. It is common for expats and tourists to hand in all their laundry for washing. It is charged by the kilo and is very cheap. For me, it feels strange to give strangers your dirty laundry, especially underwear. As an easy introduction, we had such a laundry service for the first time during our stopover at the AIRA Hotel in An Bang, where the housekeeping takes care of the guests' laundry.

When we arrived here at our apartment, we asked directly for their laundry service and they brought us a laundry list where they charge for each item individually, so too expensive.

My husband then did some research online and found a laundry in our area, "Happy Laundry", which was rated very highly by >300 people. We grabbed our laundry and headed there. It was the family home, an elderly gentleman was sitting there and it was clear that we wouldn't be able to communicate. But everything was prepared so that we didn't have to. An old-fashioned set of scales stood in the entrance, he weighed our laundry, 3.5 kg. It costs an incredible €1.20 per kilo. We have now had our laundry done there three times. We communicate via WhatsApp and the laundry is picked up one day and brought back the next. We are satified with the result. By the way, my sneakers are completely clean again. Do you remember? Hanoi, rain, toilet nozzle and hair dryer? Another worry solved!
