Delicious

After 3 weeks in Hoi An, I would like to share what we have eaten so far. We didn't go to our "canteen" every day, just every few days. There's just too much to try out.

We usually eat Vietnamese food, but I've already mentioned that we've been to Smoke House. We've even had a very good pizza, but at the Italian restaurant in the Anantara Hotel and they have a real pizza oven that also looks nice.

Here are some impressions of what we have eaten:

Row 1: Variation of steamed dumplings (1), stuffed mussels, crispy mini shrimps and pickled cucumbers (2), White Rose and Banh nam, steamed rice dumpling (3), spring rolls and Banh xeo, Vietnamese pancake (4), row 2: squids and tempura (1), apetizer asortment to self wrap into rice papers (2), pork satay (3), Bun Cha and Bun bo, bowls, row 3: fried noodles and different rolls (1), hotpot (2), Wan Tan noodle soup (3), fresh prawn and mussels which swam before (4)

I would like to highlight two special Hoi An dishes.

White Rose (left), Banh bao banh vac are small steamed rice cakes with a little shrimp and minced meat as a filling and are shaped like a rose, hence the name. Deep-fried shallots are placed on top.

Cao lau (right), a noodle dish that was invented in Hoi An. The dish combine Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines: the noodles are based on Japanese udon, the pork is like Chinese BBQ meat and the Vietnamese special sauce. Topped with fresh salads and herbs and crispy squares of dough. I only had a small portion here, so there is very little meat and dough squares on top.

There's an izakaya a few hundred meters from us, that’s why we had Japanese, too.

Even Cantonese Dim Sum is now available in Hoi An.

Unfortunately, there were few desserts, so not worthwhile sharing yet. Many restaurants don't even offer any.

Vietnam has its own coffee cultivation and a very distinctive coffee culture. Just like in London and Berlin, there are small roasteries that are proud of their own coffee roasts. And with the sweet condensed milk that gives the coffee a caramel flavor, it's just great. Our new discovery this time is the Salt Coffee. Instead of condensed milk, the coffee is topped with a generous layer of salted cream. The combination of sweet and salty is simply addictive.

We'll continue to enjoy. More in the next food post.
